Establishing a Displacement Series Using Consumer Materials |
|
|
|
Introduction:
Displacement is a chemical
reaction where one element enters a compound while releasing
another element. For example, if you place a zinc plate in a
solution of copper sulfate, copper will be released and the solution
will gradually become zinc sulfate. An opposite reaction does not
happen, so if you place a copper plate in a solution of Zinc
Sulfate, no displacement will happen. In order for us to estimate
the result of such reactions we need to establish a displacement
series. A displacement series is a list of elements where each
element is able to release all the elements after itself in the
list. |

Project
description:
In this project you will study 5 metals that can be found at home or
obtained locally. Perform experiments to determine the chemical activity
of each metal in relation to others. The metal that is more active will
substitute other metal in an ionic solution. Compile the results of your
experiments into a displacement list of metals (ranked by activity from
highest to lowest).
