The Effect of a Catalyst on the Rate of a Reaction |
|
|
|
Introduction:
A catalyst
is a substance that is added to a reaction to increase the reaction
rate. The catalyst allows the reaction to proceed by an alternate
reaction mechanism with a lower activation energy. In general all
catalysts increase the rate of reaction but the amount of increase
depends on the type of reaction and the type of catalyst. Often
scientists have to study multiple catalysts and compare the effect
of each catalyst on the rate of each specific reaction. |
