Test fruits or juices for starch
 Introduction:

While learning about plant growth and photosynthesis, we learned that green plants use the energy from the sunlight, water from the ground and carbon dioxide gas from the air to make sugar and starch. Starch is the reservoir of food for plants.

Starch may be collected in different plant parts including the fruit, roots and seeds.

In this project you will test the presence of starch in fruits. You may perform your experiments using the fruit juice or fresh fruits.

Why do we need to know about starch presence?
Starch is a dietary concern for diabetics and others who watch their weight. Starch contents of fruits may also be measured and used to estimate the proper harvest date.

 Material and instructions:
In this project you will test fruits for the presence of starch. The process my include cutting the fruit samples, juicing the fruit samples and testing the samples with an iodine tincture solution. Experiments can be done in test tubes or other small clear glass containers.
